  2. IMPORTANT INFORMATION
  3. ---------------------
  4. This file contains important information about FontConsultant 2.0
  5. please read before using the program.
  6.  
  7. DEMO VERSION RESTRICTIONS
  8. -------------------------
  9. This is a demonstration version of FontConsultant 2.0. It is fully
  10. functional except the font list will only show a maximum of 20 fonts.
  11.  
  12. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  13. -------------------
  14. * To run FontConsultant you must have: Windows 3.1, a VGA 
  15.   screen, and ATM 2.5 or later (if you want to use PostScript 
  16.   fonts). You will also need a call to share.exe in your 
  17.   autoexec.bat file (e.g. c:\dos\share /f:4096 /l:200); this 
  18.   ensures that FontConsultant can share font files that are in 
  19.   use by other applications.

  21. SIZE LIMITATIONS
  22. ----------------
  23. * FontConsultant's data file can hold information on a maximum 
  24.   of 1200 typefaces or 5000 fonts. 
  25.  
  26. * FontConsultant uses .INI files to hold information about where 
  27.   your fonts are and what catalogs you have. These files are 
  28.   limited by Windows to 64KBytes. This effectively restricts the 
  29.   number of fonts allowed in a single directory to 1000, and the 
  30.   number of fonts allowed in a single catalog to 2000.

  32. RUNNING FONTCONSULTANT FOR THE FIRST TIME
  33. -----------------------------------------
  34. * FontConsultant lists the fonts you have available for your 
  35.   currently selected (default) Windows printer. If you don't 
  36.   have a Windows printer selected you will not be able to run 
  37.   FontConsultant.
  38.  
  39. * The first time you run FontConsultant you must tell it where 
  40.   all your fonts are using the Find option. Until you do this 
  41.   the font list will be empty and you will not be able to view, 
  42.   print, install, or remove any fonts. If FontConsultant does 
  43.   not display fonts that you know you have then you have probably 
  44.   not told it where to find them.
  45.  
  46. * You must do a separate Find on each directory containing
  47.   PostScript fonts.
  48.  
  49. INSTALLING AND REMOVING FONTS
  50. -----------------------------
  51. * When using FontConsultant to install or remove PostScript fonts 
  52.   there are some circumstances under which the changes do not 
  53.   take place immediately. This will happen if you have Windows' 
  54.   Write utility running at the same time as FontConsultant. 
  55.   Some other applications may have the same effect. In these 
  56.   circumstances you may have to reboot Windows before the 
  57.   PostScript font changes take effect.
  58.  
  59. * If you are using both PostScript and TrueType fonts you must 
  60.   take care not to install two fonts with the same name. Most 
  61.   Windows applications cannot distinguish between the two 
  62.   versions, and problems can arise if the wrong font is 
  63.   selected. For example, if you have a TrueType font called 
  64.   'Futura Bold' and a PostScript font called 'Futura Bold' you 
  65.   should only have one of them installed at any one time. 
  66.  
  67. * Printer resident PostScript fonts cannot be fully removed from 
  68.   Windows' font list. Some applications may still list the fonts 
  69.   as installed because they are available on the printer even if 
  70.   they are not available on the screen.

  72. * FontConsultant can handle the new PostScript Multi Master fonts
  73.   with the following exceptions. Base fonts must be installed
  74.   and uninstalled using ATM. Font instances can only be previewed, 
  75.   or analysed, if the corresponding base font is installed.
  76.  
  77. PRINTING SAMPLES
  78. ----------------
  79. * FontConsultant uses the standard TrueType Arial font for 
  80.   headings and labels in the font sample sheets. If you do
  81.   not have Arial installed another font will be substituted. 
  82.   If you do not like the font that is chosen you can place 
  83.   an option in the [OPTIONS] section of the fontcons.ini file. 
  84.   E.g:

  86.   HeadingFont=Palatino
  87.  
  88.   This causes the Palatino font to be used instead of Arial.
  89.  
  90. * Some printer drivers may have problems when printing large 
  91.   numbers of font samples. If in doubt you should print sample 
  92.   pages in batches of 50 or less.
  93.  
  94. INSTALLATION
  95. ------------
  96. To install FontConsultant you must use Windows' file manager to 
  97. run the setup.exe program on the installation disk.
